Google Play Store To Be Added To Chromebook

Users will soon be able to use Android apps on their Chromebooks

During the I/O conference last month, Google announced its plans to add Play Store to the Chrome operating system (OS), to allow users to run Android apps on Chromebooks. The wait is finally over; Chromebook users can now run Android apps on their laptops. It is worth noting that the search engine giant is yet to officially release support for the Android Play Store on Chrome OS. The Android app support for Chromebooks is expected to arrive this fall.

If you can’t wait to use Android apps on your Chromebook, you can use the company’s ARC Welder tools, which will allow you to enjoy your favorite Android apps on your laptop. Though it will enable you to get an early feel for Android apps on Chromebook, the development tool doesn’t work as efficiently as demonstrated in the I/O conference.

With the addition of the Play Store, Google looks forward to a substantial increase in Windows’ adoption rate. The operating system has been criticized quite often for lack of quality apps. The company’s decision to make Android apps available on Chromebook is likely to increase customer satisfaction, in addition to sales numbers.

Interestingly, the VR mode of Google’s upcoming operating system, Android N, already works with a number of Android apps such as Google Map’s Street View, Google Photos, and the new version of the YouTube app. This means that Chromebook users will also be able to use these apps in the VR mode.

Google has uploaded a 23 minute video on its YouTube developer’s channel, to give users a closer look of its new feature. From the looks of it, the entire process is quite smooth. Transferring a file from Chromebook to the app seems easy, and video games seem to run smoothly.

However, it should be kept in mind that the test-run was conducted in controlled circumstances, and the actual performance is likely to differ. As per some speculations, Chromebooks with low-end specs are not likely to run large Android apps smoothly.

Several tech experts believe that its latest move will help Google to acquire a competitive edge over its main rival in the PC industry i.e. Apple. Considering the fact that Google’s Chromebook has a relatively lower price point, it is highly likely that this move will push the company to take the top spot in the PC industry.
